Welcome to the Fall 2005 edition of AAI's Climbing News |

Dear Climber,
I hope you have enjoyed a terrific summer of climbing and other outdoor activities. We are anticipating the change of season in the Cascades and Sierra. But while there is a little crispness in the air, the good weather is holding steady and conditions on the rock and ice are still largely summer-like. September and October in the Sierra and Cascades offer superb climbing and provide you with great opportunities to learn new skills or advance the ones you have. So if you have time to squeeze in a fall trip, be sure to give us a call.
In Red Rock, Nevada, we are beyond the high heat of summer and are now appreciating more moderate temperatures. The rock is excellent, the routes are numerous at every technical level, and with more airline competition into Las Vegas now, it seems to be getting steadily less expensive to fly there. We can provide local transportation, so all you have to do is get to Vegas and we'll take care of the rest!
We're still celebrating our 30th Anniversary. As we've looked back over the history of our operations in six states and sixteen countries, we have enjoyed reminiscing about the countless climbs, courses, and expeditions we have had the pleasure of leading throughout the world. We thank you for making these trips possible.
Anniversaries are great, but we are also celebrating the future - AAI's joining of forces last year with Adventure Consultants of New Zealand for our expeditions to the highest peaks of Asia, and our first trips ever to China this fall where we'll be exploring little charted areas in the Sichuan Province and making first ascents of 17,000 to 20,000-foot peaks.
For all the exploring that's been done over the last hundred years, we are lucky that there are places like southwest China, the St. Elias Range in Alaska, and Patagonia where there are many mountains that still remain to be explored for the first time. It's really exciting to be on new terrain, and while there are many famous routes to be done, in the coming seasons I urge you to experience the spirit of new adventure and alternate your climbs of the classics with some of these great explorations into less known territories.
I hope you have the opportunity to join us this fall or winter. Be sure to take advantage of the special offers we have listed below, and please give us a call if you have questions on any of our programs.
Looking forward to seeing you in the mountains,
Dunham Gooding,
Director

CLIMBING AND EXPLORING IN CHINA'S SICHUAN PROVINCE AAI Guide and Program Coordinator Andy Bourne traveled to a seldom visited corner of China with the hope of climbing peaks and routes that were previously untouched. His remarkable journey took him through villages, monasteries, and some of the world's least explored mountains. Read about his tale and enjoy the photos. Andy is leading two new trips to southwest China in September and October 2005 for first ascents on moderate, glaciated peaks (a couple of positions remain open on both trips). ![]() FALL CLIMBING OPPORTUNITIES - RED ROCK AND THE SIERRA Many people say that September and October are the best months to climb in the Sierra. The days are still long and warm, the snow is all but gone, and the summer crowds have migrated elsewhere. For a great experience, join us for a guided climb or a skills course in the Sierra this fall. Red Rock, Nevada, is fast becoming the most popular climbing destination in the US. However, this doesn't mean it will be crowded. The site is huge and the routes plentiful. Our season starts at the end of September, and we have many options for half, full, and multi-day courses and climbs. Come see why the sandstone routes of Red Rock Canyon are worth returning to year after year. Keep in mind that from most areas of the country, flights to Las Vegas are very inexpensive. We'll provide local transportation whether you camp or stay on The Strip.
