Welcome to American Alpine Institute's Climbing News - August 2003

Greetings Climbers,

We are now about half way through our summer of climbing in the Cascades of Washington, the Alps of France and Switzerland, and the Andes of Peru and Bolivia, and we are enjoying the excitement of trips beginning and ending just about every day. Those of you who have joined our guides have done some superb routes here in the Cascades, Alaska, Europe, and South America, and we are looking forward to the remaining opportunities in the final two months of our summer season.

In this newsletter you'll find a link to some trip reports from our Alaska season as well as a collection of photos in a slide show from a trip to the Alaska Range. As usual, at the bottom of this message we have included our weekly gear special from the equipment shop. We have also outlined some of the trips we will be running for the remainder of the summer season and into the fall.

Cheers from all the staff at AAI,

Dunham Gooding,
Director

2003 ALASKA TRIP REPORTS AND PHOTOS

Please follow the link above for a summary of our
2003 Alaska season and check out the slide show!

MOUNTAINEERING AND ASCENTS IN THE SIERRA

Most of our Mount Whitney programs are full for the year, but a few of the trips in August have space. We have room for a few more private trips in August as well. The Sierra Range offers some of the best alpine rock climbing in the country, and there are many peaks and routes of all levels of difficulty to choose from. You can find info on climbing there on the Sierra Alpine Rock Climbing and Sierra Classic Routes pages of our web site.

ECUADOR VOLCANOES AND HIGH ALTITUDE CLIMBING

We have recently added some new and exciting pictures to the slide shows and program pages for our Ecuador trips. We now have a number of climbers on the Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo climbs as well as the more technical Illiniza-Antisana trip, but all trips have at least a few openings. Ecuador is one of the best places to get some exposure to climbing at high altitudes, and it is a great step if you are looking to prepare for bigger expeditions to Denali or Aconcagua.

SUNSHINE AND DESERT ROCK CLIMBING

If you can't get away this summer for a trip in the Cascades, Alps, or Andes, you should consider joining us for some sunny rock climbing in the Desert Southwest this fall and winter. We will have courses and climbs available in Red Rock, Nevada and Joshua Tree, California starting in early-October. If you are interested in getting experience on long routes, check out Red Rock; if cragging style climbing appeals more to you, Joshua Tree, with its more than 3000 routes, is the place to go.

BOLIVIA - HIGH ALTITUDE CLIMBING IN THE ANDES

There's still some space left on our September trip to Bolivia. This trip is broken into 4 parts including a tour of Machu Picchu and the Cuzco area in Peru and trekking to other Inca sites in Bolivia, then climbing 17,000 to 21,000 foot peaks on excellent glacier routes in Bolivia's Cordillera Real. Our trips review and advance skills and include a series of high altitude climbs at beginner, intermediate, and advanced technical levels. You can choose trip segments to match your interests and vacation length.
