Welcome to American Alpine Institute's Fall 2004 E-Newsletter

Greetings Climbers,

It seems like just the other day that we were in the midst of one of the most perfect climbing seasons on record, and now as we look out to stormy skies through the windows of our offices here in Bellingham, Washington, we are reminded that nature's annual "re-building of the glaciers project" has begun in earnest at least in this part of the world. At the 6000-foot level of Mt. Baker, we have had a total snowfall of 61 inches (as of November 10th), and with 39 inches on the ground, we were happy to be doing our first skiing last weekend.

In addition to the Cascades, we also experienced the beginning of winter first hand in California's Sierra. In fact we moved our last Sierra alpine rock course of the fall season over to beautiful (and warm!) Red Rock near Las Vegas because of the threat of an early blizzard. If weather and temperature predictions are close to accurate (are they ever?), we should all be in for a colder than typical winter in the mid and northern latitudes. Hopefully we'll see excellent snow and ice conditions in the west and throughout the country.

It's exciting to launch the new season of climbing, skiing, and rock climbing. Rock climbers and sun seekers are well into the swing of their seasonal migration to the warm climates of the desert Southwest. We are pleased to be well underway with our climbing season in Red Rock and Joshua Tree.

Did you have a busy summer? All work and no play? Been waiting for a chance to get away? Consider joining us for a few days or a week in Red Rock, Nevada, or Joshua Tree, California, for some superb rock climbing (and take advantage of the remarkably cheap airfares available to Las Vegas and Los Angeles). If time is tight, remember that you can also do ice climbing, skiing, and winter mountaineering trips with us for anything from a day or two up to a week (California and Colorado).

If you have time for a slightly longer adventure, 10 days will be enough for you to join a high altitude expedition to Illiniza Sur and Antisana in Ecuador. Or with just two weeks vacation, you can either climb Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and 20,000-foot Chimborazo in Ecuador, or join us in southern Patagonia for a traverse of the ice cap or treks and easy ascents in the Fitroy-Cerro Torre area of Argentina and the Torres del Paine area of Chile. If you are working on your Seven Summits, we have a couple of expeditions to Aconcagua that still have space available.

We hope you enjoy the stories and announcements in this newsletter. You can also follow some of the links to the trips I've mentioned to get more detail.

Hoping to see you in the Andes, the desert Southwest, or one of our great winter climbing venues,

Dunham Gooding,
Director

ECUADOR - TRIP REPORT AND PHOTOS

Ever wonder what it's like to climb the high altitude volcanoes of Ecuador? Check out AAI office staff member Scott Schumann's trip report from Cayambe and Cotopaxi. Our Ecuador expeditions kick off this month and will be running through February. Ecuador is a great place for climbers without experience climbing above 16,000 feet to get an excellent introduction to climbing at altitude, to learn or further advance alpine skills, and do some fantastic climbing along the way. Our two programs in Ecuador, the Cayambe, Chimborazo, and Cotopaxi trip (15 days, beginner-intermediate) and the Illiniza/Antisana Expedition (10 days, intermediate or advanced) both combine cultural and sight seeing experiences with ascents of big scale, heavily glaciated peaks.
RED ROCK AND VEGAS - THE PERFECT COMBINATION OF ACTIVITY AND ENTERTAINMENT

If you are a rock climber and have never been to Red Rock, you are missing out on something VERY good. There is no other place like this gorgeous high desert environment and no other place that can offer such a wide range of climbing options for all ability levels. Some climbers combine their experience on the rock with business or with the great range of entertainment available in Las Vegas, while others choose to avoid the city all together and enjoy serene desert nights and sunny days on the rock. Climbs and courses can be set up for half or full days from now until May. Come see what climbing in the desert is all about.

AVALANCHE! - NEW LEVEL 1 and LEVEL 2 AVALANCHE AWARENESS COURSES

Ready for the winter snow season? Across the country, skiers and snowboarders have been leaving the groomed runs and trails in record numbers in search of the backcountry powder and first turns. Many of these adventure seekers have never learned what it takes to stay alive in the backcountry. Our two-and-a-half day Level 1 course will teach you how to assess avalanche danger, travel safely in the backcountry, and rescue people who have been caught in avalanches. This course should be mandatory for anyone stepping under the ski area boundary markers and heading for the backcountry. It's also essential for snowshoers heading into avalanche terrain. The Level 2 course is intended for people with a serious interest in snow science including snow stability factors, snowpack formation, and the metamorphosis that a snowpack can undergo. This course will include 12-15 hours of classroom training and 20-24 hours in the field over two successive weekends.
WOMEN'S PROGRAMS - NEW CLIMBING COURSES

The focus of AAI's women's programs is to educate women about safe climbing practices in a non-competitive, nurturing environment. The programs' goals are to promote self-reliance, individual responsibility, and camaraderie among women. The positive learning environment created on the course fosters personal growth and improves self-esteem. All are led by women instructors. Follow the link for a list of courses and dates.
