Welcome to American Alpine Institute's Winter 2004 E-Newsletter

Greetings from AAI,

We're into the thick of winter and enjoying some great snow and ice conditions in Washington, Colorado, and California. OK, at least Colorado, and California. Things are off to a low start here in the Northwest. We hope you've had the chance to get out and enjoy the new season or that you will be able to do so soon.

This is a short newsletter with one story, a few up-dates, and a reminder about gift certificates in case you are still looking for something to give a friend, partner, or spouse.

The are lots of travel and climbing opportunities coming up in the next few months, and we hope that if you have a little time available you'll be able to join us for some trekking, climbing, or skiing, either in the western U.S. or in South America, where we have 10 and 15-day trips in Ecuador, two Aconcagua expeditions, and 12-day trips of climbing and trekking around Cerro Torre and Fitzroy, and out on the Patagonia Ice Cap. Check our web site for itineraries and great photos.

All of us here at AAI wish you Happy Holidays and a year of good health, prosperity, and adventure in 2005.

Cheers to you,

Dunham Gooding,
Director

RED ROCK - TRIP REPORT AND PHOTOS

Whether or not you've been to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, you probably know that its scenery and wildlife make it one of our national treasures and that it exhibits some of America's finest rock. We think you'll enjoy this account of a recent new route established by AAI guide Jason Martin and client Brian Cotter (Arlington, VA), who together put up a new Grade III, 5.5 route. If you'd like to catch some warm sun in the middle of winter, consider joining us in the desert for a day or two or more of superb rock climbing. Check out our beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses and climbs in Red Rock.

ECUADOR - TRIP UPDATES

AAI guide Dylan Taylor has now completed two high altitude expeditions in Ecuador, and he begins his third one this weekend. In early November, Grant Mason (St. Paul, MN), Friedhelm Brinkhaus and Michael Baldwin (Des Moines, IA) joined Dylan for climbs of Cayambe (18,997'), Cotopaxi (19,348'), and Chimborazo (20,703'). Just this past week Fred Strehlow (Salem, OR), Timothy Jung and Kevin Vinnes (Minneapolis, MN), Mary Ann Dornfeld (Lafayette, CO), and Haruki Inokuchi (Tokyo) completed their trip with ascents of Illiniza Norte (16,861'), Illiniza Sur (17,268'), and Antisana (18,714'). Three high altitude peaks in ten days - quite an accomplishment! Congratulations to the members of both of these teams.

We still have a place for you if you would like to climb in Ecuador in January or February. Veteran AAI guide Mark Johnson will lead climbers on Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo on 15-day trips beginning January 7th and again on February 18th. Another senior guide, Andrew Wexler will be leading the ten-day Illiniza / Antisana Expedition from January 14-23. Give us a call if you would like to consider joining us. If you wonder what its like on one of these high altitude programs and missed Scott Schumann's recent account of his climbs on Cayambe and Cotopaxi, check out his trip report.

ACONCAGUA - TWO EXPEDITIONS DEPART IN JANUARY

After leading the Ecuador program over the Christmas-New Year's holiday period, Dylan Taylor heads to Mendoza, Argentina to begin an Aconcagua Expedition on January 8th. At the end of the month Andrew Wexler also heads south from Quito to lead a second expedition January 29-February 21. There is still room on that trip if you would like to do one of the Seven Summits and climb to the top of the Western Hemisphere. We haven't missed a summit on our expeditions to Aconcagua in years, and we hope you'll be able to join us for this rewarding three-week journey to 22,842 feet.
